Terms of service

Effective October 19, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Household for using Household: the website at tryhousehold.com, the web app (in a browser or added to a phone's home screen) and the Windows desktop app. Please read them, along with our privacy policy, which explains how we handle your information.

In these terms, "Household", "we" and "us" mean the operator of the Household app and of tryhousehold.com, and "you" means the person using it.

1. Agreeing to these terms

By creating an account or using Household, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use Household.

2. Who can use Household

You must be at least 13 years old to use Household. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use Household only with the permission of a parent or guardian who agrees to these terms for you. You may not use Household if the law prevents you from doing so.

3. Your account

  • Give accurate information when you create your account, and keep it up to date.
  • Your account is for you alone. Do not share your password or let anyone else sign in as you.
  • Keep your password and your devices secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
  • If you think someone else has used your account, email support@tryhousehold.com right away.

4. Households, members and roles

Household is built for sharing. Everything added to a household is visible to all of its members, and members can change what others have added. Before you invite someone, make sure you are comfortable with them seeing everything in your household.

  • Owners manage the household: they invite and remove people, choose each person's role, connect Google Calendar, set approval rules, decide approvals and can permanently delete items. Owners are responsible for the people they invite.
  • Managers work from the same lists and schedule, and ask for approval where the household's rules require it.
  • When someone is removed from a household, their access ends right away, and what they added stays with the household.

Household does not handle money. Expenses, reimbursements, purchase requests and approvals are records your household keeps for itself. Any purchase or payment happens outside Household, between the people involved, and Household is not a party to it.

5. Your content

Your content is everything you or your household add to Household: tasks, projects, meals, recipes, groceries, expenses, vendors, comments, photos, files and the rest. You keep ownership of your content.

So that we can run Household, you give us permission to store, copy, process and display your content, and to show it to the members of your household, only as needed to provide, secure and improve Household for you. This permission ends when your content is deleted, except for copies in backups until they expire, or where the law requires us to keep it.

You are responsible for your content. Add only content you have the right to add, including information and photos of other people.

6. Acceptable use

When you use Household, do not:

  • break the law, or help anyone else do so;
  • harass anyone, or invade anyone's privacy;
  • add content that infringes anyone's rights, or that you are not allowed to share;
  • try to reach another household's information, another person's account, or any part of our systems you are not allowed to reach;
  • upload viruses or other harmful code, or interfere with Household or the networks it runs on;
  • overload Household, or use automated means to access it, except through the app itself;
  • use recipe import to reach pages you are not allowed to access, or to send unwanted traffic to any website;
  • copy, sell or offer Household to others, or take it apart to build a competing service, except where the law allows it.

If you find a security problem, please tell us at support@tryhousehold.com rather than testing it further.

7. Google and other services

Household works with services run by others, such as Google sign-in and Google Calendar, your browser's push notification service, and websites you import recipes from. Your use of those services is also governed by their own terms and privacy policies, such as Google's Terms of Service. We are not responsible for services we do not run.

If an owner connects Google Calendar, Household shows events from the calendars the owner chooses to your whole household, and changes events in Google Calendar when someone in the household adds, changes or deletes them in the app, on the calendars the owner set to Show and edit. Owners decide which calendars to connect and how each one is used. An owner can disconnect at any time. Our privacy policy describes exactly what Household reads and writes.

8. The desktop app

We give you permission to install and use the Household desktop app on Windows computers, only to use Household. The app updates itself when a new version is available. You can uninstall it at any time.

9. Changes and availability

Household is still growing. We may add, change or remove features, and Household may sometimes be unavailable, for example during maintenance or if a provider we rely on has an outage. We work to keep Household running and your information safe, but we cannot promise it will always be available or work without errors. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.

Household's reminders and notifications depend on your devices, their settings and your connection. Do not rely on Household as the only reminder of anything where a late or missed reminder could cause harm.

10. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent the law allows, Household is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. We do not promise that Household will be uninterrupted, secure or without errors, that information will never be lost, or that information from other services, such as your calendars or an imported recipe, will be accurate.

Some places do not allow some of these disclaimers. If you live in one of them, these disclaimers apply only as far as the law there allows.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Household and the people who run it will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, revenue or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of Household or these terms, even if we were told such damages were possible.

To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability for all claims arising from or related to Household or these terms is limited to one hundred US dollars (US$100).

Some places do not allow these limits. If you live in one of them, these limits apply only as far as the law there allows. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

12. Ending your use

You can stop using Household at any time, and ask us to delete your account or your household as our privacy policy describes.

We may suspend or end your access to Household if you break these terms, if the law requires it, or if it is needed to protect other people, your household or Household. When we reasonably can, we will tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem.

If we ever stop offering Household, we will give reasonable notice where we can, so you can ask us for a copy of your information first.

Sections 5 (for copies in backups), 10, 11 and 14 continue to apply after your use ends.

13. Changes to these terms

If these terms change, we will post the new version on this page with a new effective date. If a change is significant, we will give notice before it takes effect, on this site or in the app. If you keep using Household after a change takes effect, you agree to the new terms. If you do not agree, please stop using Household.

14. General

  • These terms and our privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Household.
  • If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If we do not enforce part of these terms at some point, we can still enforce it later.
  • You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else without our written permission. We may transfer ours as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of Household, and these terms will keep applying.
